Freelance camera operator & cinematographer for environmental and outdoor media. Chasing beauty in the unexplored — solo, self-sufficient, and field-ready anywhere the story leads.
Primary and additional camera for multi-cam and single-shooter days. Handheld, gimbal, and long-lens coverage that holds up in the wild.
Lensing, lighting, and look for brand and editorial films. Building toward director of photography credits on outdoor and environmental work.
Self-contained, travel-ready coverage when the budget or the terrain calls for one person who can carry the whole shoot.
Licensed drone work (FAA Part 107) and in-water angles where the environment is the story — coastlines, rivers, ridgelines, and everything between.
Story-first edits, color, and delivery. From selects to a graded cut that's ready to publish.
Weatherproofed kit, backup workflows, and someone who's comfortable a long way from the nearest road. Low-fuss on set, dependable off it.
Star fields, day-to-night transitions, and landscapes compressed in time — patient work shot from remote camps, far from light pollution.
I'm Kaulike Jansen — a cinematographer and camera operator with a background in environmental science. Raised on Maui and trained at Northern Arizona University, I learned to read landscapes, wildlife, and the people connected to them before I ever learned to light them. That's still how I work a frame: look closer, find the honest detail everyone else walks past.
A decade behind the camera has taken me through the whole pipeline — operating, lensing, editing, color, delivery — but my place is on set. Backcountry solo missions, conservation stories, commercial crews: the goal doesn't change. Immersive, cinematic, honest images, made with intention.
Off set you'll find me hiking, off-roading, or already scouting the next story worth telling.
Available for day rates, multi-day shoots, and travel or expedition work — as camera operator, second unit, or DP. Tell me the location and the story; I'll tell you how I'd shoot it.
